PLAYING FOR LIFE AND ENJOYMENT

Few people will disagree that sport is generally a healthy pursuit. Most people will also agree with the notion of “healthy body, healthy mind”. And so it is that physical activity and sport have traditionally played an important part in most schools in South Africa. It is really no different at Southern Cross Schools where sport and outdoor pursuits also play a very important role in the education that is offered. The difference perhaps is the emphasis that is given to these activities at different levels in the school.

In the Foundation and Intermediate Phases, physical activities are done to enhance the children’s physical development, general coordination, gross and fine motor skills and eye-hand coordination. There is a strong emphasis on mass participation and enjoyment and although competition exists, the importance of personal development and good sportsmanship is stressed. Inter-school competition at this level is undertaken purely to allow our children to play the game and for the social interaction that goes with team sport.

In the Senior and GET Phases a more competitive approach is taken. Children at this stage of their development need to test their skills against opposition of their own age and quality so that they can learn to be humble in victory and gracious in defeat. The overall emphasis, however, is still to play sport for the enjoyment derived from it. Children are taught that both winning and losing are part of the game. At the end of the day children should enjoy sport so that once they are adults they feel the need to do sport for recreation and to maintain their personal fitness and health.
