We acknowledge that
at Southern Cross Schools we need to have our academic foundation set on a
secure knowledge of the nature of our pupils and their needs as they accept the
challenges of the future. The academic thrust is dynamic, enthusiastic and
creative. It recognizes the need for a holistic and integrated education for our
pupils. Our policy incorporates as its focal point, an Outcomes Based
approach. It is based on three main principles:
● To
know ● To do and ● To value
Whilst ultimately the curriculum has been developed and
owned by the staff, it follows the National policy, 'Curriculum
2005'.
The curriculum allows for levels of individuality, creativity and
inclusivity and together with sound didactic teaching our educators will
encourage enquiry-based education. Here the pupils are guided to think laterally
and creatively and encouraged to solve real-world problems within our natural
environment, which serves as a wonderful vehicle for our education. The
learners are encouraged to serve the broader community. This demands service of
self in terms of time, talents and
commitment |

Our philosophy
is encapsulated in the following:
● A
balanced and integrated approach is the key to success. As such, our learners
are exposed to a broad range of concepts from numerous disciplines.
● The learners have ample
opportunity to develop a range of life skills through practical activities. The
advantage being that such activities are 'real world' as opposed to the
simulated experiences within an urban classroom.
● Educating for survival means more than facing the facts beyond the
shelter of our classroom walls. We develop flexibility and the ability to adapt
to the needs of our times.
● We have developed an
educational programme that looks towards the reality of our global village and
more specifically at Southern Africa.
● The
development of a sense of personal responsibility for the environment is a key
aim. Revised attitudes will impact positively on the resultant behaviour of the
learners.
● We need a programme that
promotes concern, caring and above all commitment.
● A programme that promotes an analysis of environmental issues through
data gathering and an interpretation which leads to problem identification and
ultimately a problem solution.
● It
will provide learners with the opportunity to acquire vital concepts in a
meaningful environment. These will be reinforced by practical, hands-on
activities and will extend beyond traditional
curricula. |
