This is the birth
of a revolutionary educational ethos; a 'Nature Based Education System'.
Combining elements of the government's new Outcomes Based Education and President
Thabo Mbeki's vision of an African Renaissance - Southern Cross Schools represents
the exciting, diverse and dynamic country we live in. Having opened its doors
in January 2002, as a complete primary and pre-primary school, drawing pupils
from near and far.

Globally mankind
needs to analyse environmental issues. The generations of the future have to be
environmentally aware if we are to survive. It is vital that concepts such as
sustainable development, bio-diversity and how to achieve environmental awareness
whilst retaining a sense of environmental integrity are grasped.

The pupils are taught how to identify this Kingfisher and are shown the wing span.
Below is a class in the process of learning about bones and what they can tell

Through the medium
of the natural environment, pupils can be exposed to
issues of multiculturalism and the challenges of the environment
itself, where they test themselves in a different context within
a variety of appropriate activities so promoting a deeper understanding
of themselves.

The greatest value of the school will be realised when our vision of sharing our
nature based curriculum and environmental ethos with the many schools and communities
in the region comes to fruition. Southern Cross School believes it can make a
significant contribution to our economy by reaching and educating people in this
valuable environmental concept.
